Medea electra author6/23/2023 Some commentators go so far as to credit him with the birth of an early form of psychological drama.Įuripides’ characters often challenge divine wisdom, disrupt divine order, and face situations for which there are no easy answers in their attempts to make sense of their world. Like the other dramatists, Euripides drew his characters from the realm of myth and tales of epic heroism, but his protagonists are drawn on a more human scale. In his work, Euripides is not content to believe in the ultimate wisdom and goodness of the gods, and his heroes and heroines are not the almost superhuman figures that appear in other plays of the age. Compared to the work of Aeschylus and Sophocles-the only other writers of tragedies whose work has survived the millenia-Euripides’ plays treat the human side of the dilemmas they present in a way that still captures our imagination. Perhaps more than any of the other dramatists of the Greek classic age, Euripides appeals to modern audiences.

Wurmbrand movie6/22/2023 Based on the testimony of VOM founder Pastor Richard Wurmbrand as written in his international bestseller Tortured for Christ, this movie was produced By The Voice of the Martyrs to honor the 50th anniversary of the book’s 1967 release. Filmed entirely on location in Romania, including in the very prison where Richard endured torture and solitary confinement, this is the cinematic retelling of one of the most powerfully inspiring and historically significant testimonies of all time. Through it all, they loved their enemies and sought to win their torturers for Christ. Their only “crimes” were their faith and witness for Jesus Christ. It’s in the beautiful, wild Peak District, a National Park, near the town of Bakewell, which Austen renamed Lambton. It is a huge house-palatial, befitting a Duke, surely much more impressive than Elizabeth would have expected. Jane Austen based Pemberley on Chatsworth House, the Derbyshire seat of the Dukes of Devonshire. I’ve tried to have the same kind of thing happen in Out, Proud, and Prejudiced when Bennet, my main character, goes to Pemberley, first for an interview, then for work experience. It gives her a new perspective on him, one that shows him to be kinder and less self-satisfied than she had previously thought. Her previous comment teased Jane about Bingley, and Jane says, “Now, be serious,” and after this second answer, Jane makes “another entreaty that she would be serious,” so it’s very clear to Jane (and it should be clear to the reader) that Elizabeth is far from a gold-digger.Īll the same, something definitely happens when Elizabeth visits Pemberley, sees Darcy on his home ground and meets his shy sister and his devoted housekeeper. There’s a line in Pride and Prejudice that ruins the ending for some modern readers because they take it literally: when Jane asks Elizabeth how long she has loved Darcy, Elizabeth replies, “I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.”

Collapse by jared diamond6/21/2023 The passivity of Easter chiefs and Maya kings in the face of the real big threats to their societies completes our list of disquieting parallels. Like Easter Island chiefs erecting ever larger statues, eventually crowned by pukao, and like Anasazi elite treating themselves to necklaces of 2,000 turquoise beads, Maya kings sought to outdo each other with more and more impressive temples, covered with thicker and thicker plaster-reminiscent in turn of the extravagant conspicuous consumption by modern American CEOs. Like his previous book, the international bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel, Collapse is a monumental study of the interaction between history, culture, climate, and the environmentbut from the other side. This Study Guide consists of approximately 62 pages of chapter summaries, quotes, character analysis, themes, and more - everything you need to sharpen your knowledge of Collapse. In Collapse, Pulitzer Prizewinning author and UCLA professor Jared Diamond supplies the key. Paralleling the eventual extension of agriculture from Easter Island's coastal lowlands to its uplands, and from the Mimbres floodplain to the hills, Copan's inhabitants also expanded from the floodplain to the more fragile hill slopes, leaving them with a larger population to feed when the agricultural boom in the hills went bust. Collapse - Chapter 12: China, Lurching Giant Summary & Analysis. “As on Easter Island and at Chaco Canyon, Maya peak population numbers were followed swiftly by political and social collapse.

of Stephens's Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan. Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatán was a best seller in its day and has been called an “Indiana Jones” saga by modern reviewers. John Lloyd Stephens, who had also entered the railroad business and was. Their guide, slashing through the rampant growth with his machete, leads them to a stone column, fourteen feet high, sculptured on the front with a portrait of a man, “solemn, stern and well fitted to excite terror,” covered on the sides with hieroglyphics, and with workmanship “equal to the finest monuments of the Egyptians.” Stephens records their discoveries and also his travels in Central America, while Catherwood directs his immense artistic talent to illustrating views of Mayan architecture. In this work, and in his other masterpiece Incidents of Travel in Yucatan, he tells the story of his travels to some 50 ruined Mayan cities. Two men, John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, are about to rediscover Mayan civilization. But Stephen's two expeditions to Mexico and Central America in 18 yielded the first solid information on the culture of the Maya Indians. Harper & Brothers, 1841 - Central America.
