Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby6/20/2023 ![]() It’s about Hornby’s life, punctuated by the highs and lows of supporting Arsenal over the latter parts of the 20 th century: his first trip to Highbury with his newly-divorced father, his affair with Cambridge United whilst at university, and his recurring nightmares reflecting his greatest anxiety about becoming a father – that his future child might become a Spurs supporter. Contrary to how it’s just been described, this is not a book about football. Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch offers a fantastic and comprehensive insight into the mind of the football supporter who will forego social plans, family events, baptisms and bar mitzvahs in order to make it to a home game, and it does so with fantastic style. His mirror-image of my own annoyingness forces me to ask myself: “why do I want to watch an FA Cup fourth round tie between QPR and Sheffield Wednesday on a Friday night?” It wasn’t worth watching. He’s answered by mimicking my habit of cracking out the football chants at a house party as the evening draws on. ![]() ![]() I’ve just asked him if he wants to watch an FA Cup fourth round tie between QPR and Sheffield Wednesday on a Friday night. “THE FINEST FOOTBALL TEAM,” sarcastically bellows my future housemate, the inimitable Aydin, “THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.” ![]()
